In this blog post, I’ll show you how to make an easy Cricut Christmas gift: a DIY vinyl decal project that not only adds a personal touch to your cups but also makes for a fantastic holiday gift.

Project Details

This project offers two options for cup decals. Choose the one that you want to make and delete the other. These designs work in both two-color and single-color variations. You can follow the provided instructions as is for a fun two-color look or opt to weld the layers together for an elegant single-color design (as shown in the photo).

To ensure longevity, we recommend using Premium Permanent Vinyl. This durable material is washable, making it ideal for cups that will endure regular use. Before you begin, don’t forget to measure the surface of your cup and resize the design accordingly for a perfect fit.

Tips and Tricks

Here are some handy tips and tricks to make your cup decal project a breeze:

  • Weed Vinyl While Still Attached to Mat: This helps in better control and precision during the weeding process.
  • Weed Small Pieces First: Begin by weeding the smaller pieces before peeling away the larger outside portion. It streamlines the process and minimizes the risk of errors.
  • Align Transfer Tape Grid Lines: When applying the transfer tape, align its grid lines with the bottom of the text for easy and accurate alignment on the cup.
  • Clean Cup Thoroughly: If your cup is made of glass or porcelain, clean it with alcohol and wipe it with a lens cleaning cloth to remove any lint. This ensures a smooth application of the vinyl decal.

Steps to Create the Cup Decal

  1. Gather Materials:
    • Cutting Mat
    • Premium Permanent Vinyl
    • Transfer Tape
    • Cup
  2. Choose and Resize Design:
    • Select the desired design in the project and delete the other.
    • Resize the design to fit your cup if necessary.
    • Proceed to make it!
  3. Prepare Vinyl:
    • Place the vinyl on the cutting mat.
    • Follow the instructions on Design Space.
    • Select Vinyl as the cutting material and use your Cricut machine to cut the design.
  4. Weed Vinyl:
    • Carefully weed the vinyl, removing the excess material.
  5. Prepare Transfer Tape:
    • Align the transfer tape over the design and burnish it for optimal adhesion.
  6. Apply Vinyl to Cup:
    • Place the vinyl decal onto the pre-cleaned cup surface.
    • Burnish the design onto the cup, ensuring a secure attachment.
  7. Remove Transfer Tape:
    • Gently peel away the transfer tape, leaving the vinyl decal beautifully applied to your festive cup.
